People Management Case studies
Legacy
Finance Team Alignment
Nike
Role: Group Manager to Nike Global Finance.
Challenge: Things change frequently, often without control, but
usually with warning. My challenge was to prepare the Nike Legacy Finance team
to work strategically and resourcefully.
Action: Aligned management and personal objectives and
whiteboarded a team strategy. Met individually to validate roles and detail the
plan with processes and goals. Provided motivation, direction, training,
resources, and a weekly status round table. Rewarded teamwork, productivity
improvement, and doing the right job.
Results: Nike soon unrolled a Global Supply Chain project and
individuals exercised their planning and transition skills as they eliminated
their jobs and migrated to other strategic projects. Developed a highly
effective and productive team and reduced ongoing maintenance from 70% to 30%.
CIO Retention
Policy
Nike
Role: Represented Nike Global Finance to write retention
policy for the CIO. Challenge: Work with peers to quickly identify, develop, and
implement a comprehensive solution.
Action: Agreed on leadership, scope, and timeline. Met
weekly to develop and review work, including budgets and guidelines.
Results: The retention committee presented its work at the
next division meeting. I presented recognition policy, the “Spot Award”.
Multi-Country
Container Consolidation
Nike
Role: Senior Project Manager to the Nike Program Office
‘Multi-Country Container Consolidation’ implementation.
Challenge: Take a valuable idea to market with no resources.
Action: Coordinated a virtual team of system experts, open
contractors, and business experts to design and implement a container
management solution.
Results: Total out of pocket $20K. Container savings $20K /
week.
